I suffered a lot with dry and brittle hair especially when my hair was relaxed, I just put it down to using such strong chemicals on my hair to straighten it, plus every so often I would (badly) dye my hair.
But even when I did the big chop and chose to grow out my natural hair - this was still a problem.
I had no idea that my shampoo which had sulphates in it was likely to be the cause.

Sulphates are chemicals (or surfactants) that are used in many everyday items like soaps, shower gels, soap liquid, cleaning sprays and shampoos for cleaning purposes. It is responsible for that foamy lather you get when using them.
They are very effective in removing oils and dirt from your hair, they make it easier to rinse your hair when mixed with water and even helps to prevent build-up.
If you suddenly feel the urge to check the ingredients list on your shampoo bottle, any of the following ingredients means your shampoo has sulphates in it:

According to Gretchen Friese, a certified trichologist, the problem with sulphates is that they “may strip away too much moisture and leave the hair dry and possibly damage it”.
If you have a sensitive scalp, it can potentially cause irritation through itchiness and redness.
“For those with colour-treated hair, sulphates can also strip and dull your hair colour,” says Jennifer Korab, a professional hairstylist.
And as for afro / curly hair types, sulphate-free shampoos might be the best option as these hair types are more susceptible to dryness.
It’s important to recognise that every person’s hair or scalp sensitivity is different and therefore might not necessarily respond the same or as harshly as others.
“Most people can use products containing SLS without worrying about skin or scalp irritation,” says Dr Stefanie Morris, Dermatologist & Medical Director at European Dermatology London.
