No, it’s not a typo! According to Pinterest Predicts, “Kitschens” is the new decor trend set to replace quiet luxury with its clashing bright colours and vintage-inspired appliances.

Pinterest’s data shows that searches for “kitschy kitchen” have increased by 75%, searches for “eclectic kitchen décor” have jumped by 50% and searches for “eccentric kitchen” have skyrocketed by 150%, but you might be wondering, what exactly makes a kitchen “kitsch”?

What Is A Kitsch Decoration?

The term “kitsch” refers to a style that is exaggerated, overly decorative, and often characterised by a nostalgic or retro aesthetic.

It is a style that embraces the whimsical, quirky, and nostalgic elements of the past, often taking inspiration from vintage themes and objects.

There are several key elements that make a kitchen kitsch. First and foremost, the use of bright, bold colours is a common characteristic.

Think vibrant reds, yellows, blues, greens and pinks that are often associated with retro kitchens from the 1950s and 1960s.

In fact, searches for “green kitchen paint” and “ retro pink kitchens” have increased by 55% and 40% respectively. These colours help create a cheerful and playful atmosphere.

Another important aspect of kitchen kitsch is the use of vintage or retro-inspired decor and appliances.

This can include vintage-themed artwork, signage, and accessories as well as retro-style refrigerators, toasters, and mixers - hi Smeg! These elements add a sense of nostalgia and whimsy to the space.

Pattern and texture play a significant role in kitchen kitsch as well. Polka dots, gingham, floral prints, and checkerboard patterns are commonly found in this style.

These patterns can be incorporated through wallpaper, curtains, tablecloths, or even kitchen utensils and dishware which are perfect options if you just want to dip your toes into this maximalist aesthetic.

Will be trying this decor trend in your kitchen?
