Move over Plazacore and Dark Academia, there’s a new fashion trend gaining momentum called ‘Balletcore’.

As the name suggests, it comes from the mesmerising world of ballet, but it’s taken a grand jeté into the heart of mainstream style.

Fuelled by the enduring ‘Black Swan’ aesthetics and the pulsing energy of New York’s fashion scene, Balletcore creatively intertwines the elegance of classical ballet with the comfort of everyday wear.

This unexpected fusion of elegance and comfort brings a dance rehearsal vibe to everyday wear, gamely turning sidewalks into your personal dance floor.

So, if you’re set on mastering this trend with the same precision a ballerina would her moves, then strap in, or rather, lace up your ballet flats and let’s explore!

What Is The Balletcore Trend?

Balletcore is a recent trend that has gained prominence in fashion, aesthetics, and lifestyle circles.

In the context of fashion, balletcore combines the elegance and comfort of ballet attire with a modern twist that includes influences from streetwear fashion.

Balletcore outfits may include leotards, tutus, wrap tops, ballet flats, and leg warmers paired up with other items like baggy jeans, denim skirts and belted blazers.

The colour palette of balletcore fashion leans heavily on pastels, particularly pink, as well as white, black, and nude tones.

This wouldn’t be the first time that ballet has been a source of fashion inspiration though.

Vivienne Westwood stylishly curated ballet-inspired outfits to be worn by dancers during the intermission for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s concert in 2014.

More recently, a ballet show inspired by Coco Chanel premiered in March 2023 in Hong Kong.

It was a joint collaboration between the Hong Kong Ballet, Atlanta Ballet and Queensland Ballet celebrating the life and legacy of the fashion icon.

High-end fashion brand, Miu Miu has a strong connection with balletcore too.

In 2022, their Autumn/Winter fashion show showcased models wearing satin ballet flat shoes with thick leg warmers.

The shoes had straps wrapped around the ankle, drawing a direct parallel to pointe shoes worn by ballet dancers.

The ballerina-inspired footwear for that show was reminiscent of their 2016 collection, which featured ballet shoes with tartan ankle wraps.

Additionally, their clothing lines have featured tulle skirts, chiffon dresses and body-hugging tops with delicate details like bows and ribbons.

The Influence Of Balletcore In Pop Culture

Balletcore fashion has made its mark not only on the runway or down our Instagram feeds but also in popular culture.

From music videos to TV shows, its influence can be seen across different forms of media.

In her 2021 “Brutal” music video, Olivia Rodrigo donned a Roberto Cavalli corset mini dress draped in flowy chiffon and a beaded fringe (the exact dress that Britney Spears wore at the 2003 American Music Awards) and blue-grey satin ballet shoes.

The supporting dancers are dressed in full ballet attire, tutus and all.

‘Euphoria’ Actress Sydney Sweeney posed like a ballerina for pictures posted on her Instagram in a baby pink tute-esque dress by Giambattista Valli.

Key Elements of Balletcore Fashion

So if you’re wondering what the must-have pieces should be included in a balletcore-inspired ensemble, celebrity stylist, Tanya Tamburin tells InStyle, “everything from tulle skirts to soft satin tops, bodysuits, wrap-tops and cardigans, leg warmers paired with skirts or over leggings and, of course, ballet flats.”

Here are some of our favourites:

1. Ballet Flats: A Timeless Classic

Unlike the toe shoes worn by professional dancers, ballet flats are comfortable and easy to walk in.

They can be paired with a variety of outfits, from workwear to casual jeans and a t-shirt.

Look for flats with feminine details like bows or satin ribbons to add an extra touch of uber-feminine charm to your ensemble.

2. Bodysuits: Effortless Elegance

A simple bodysuit is a must-have in any balletcore wardrobe.

It provides a sleek and streamlined silhouette, reminiscent of the form-fitting leotards worn by dancers.

They can be paired with jeans, skirts, or layered under wrap tops for a stylish and versatile outfit.

3. Wrap Tops & Jumpers: Adding A Touch Of Ballet

Balletcore has a lot of emphasis on fluid and feminine silhouettes.

Wrap tops, with their ability to cinch at the waist and create a flattering shape, are perfect for achieving this look.

Wrap tops are also very versatile for many occasions. For a casual ballet-inspired look, a wrap top can be paired with high-waisted leggings or a mini skirt.

For a more formal outfit, a wrap top can be paired with a tulle skirt or tailored trousers.

4. Leggings: Comfort & Style Combined

Comfort is a key aspect of balletcore fashion, and what better way to achieve it than with a pair of cotton leggings?

Opt for solid-coloured leggings that can be worn under skirts or paired with a cosy wrap jumper.

Choose high-quality leggings that offer both comfort and durability, allowing you to move freely throughout your day.

5. Tulle Skirts: Embracing The Tutu Vibe

This iconic piece captures the essence of ballet and adds a touch of whimsy to any outfit.

Whether you opt for a mini or midi length, a tulle skirt can be paired with a bodysuit or a wrap top.

Choose a skirt in a soft pastel colour or a classic black for a timeless look.

6. Hair Accessories: Adding The Finishing Touch

Don’t forget to accessorise with hair accessories.

Satin bows, headbands, or embellished hair clips can add a touch of elegance and femininity to your hairstyle.

Consider adding a satin bow ponytail embellishment or a delicate headband to elevate your look and capture the essence of ballet-inspired fashion.
