The bedroom is the little haven of calm vibes and relaxation after a stressful day, so you’ll no doubt want this space to be free from clutter, fully optimised, and practical in a way that works best for your individual needs.

But if you have limited space in your bedroom, you’ll need to get creative.

From pegboards to storage headboards, there are actually lots of ways to improve the space in your bedroom, I’ve narrowed it down to 23 of the most brilliant space-saving tips and tricks for your bedroom.

1. VACUUM PACK UNUSED CLOTHES

Vacuum storage bags are a great way to store unused or rarely worn clothes. You can simply put them under your bed, or wardrobe or keep them hidden in the back of your drawers.

They offer three times more space and protect clothes from dust mites, dirt and moisture.

You can get this set of 2 vacuum storage bags from Dunelm for £6.

2. INSTALL HIGH WALL MOUNTED SHELVES ALONG THE PERIMETER

There’s no doubt that a good chunk of space around the perimeter of your bedroom near the ceiling is empty and could be put to better use.

We always tend to put floating shelves mid-way up the wall but having shelves even higher means you can store away rarely used things and just kind of forget about them as it’s way above your eye level.

3. BUY A GAS LIFT BED

A bed with a big mouth to gobble up all your less frequently used shoes, accessories, blankets, books - you name it!

These beds have built-in gas lift arms which makes it simple and easy for the bed to be lifted up.

4. INSTALL A PEGBOARD ON THE WALL

Not just for the garage! You may be used to seeing pegboards in the same room as the toolbox, but nowadays they are a convenient solution in almost any room that needs a little extra storage.

Pegboards have become an innovative and cost-effective way to store your little bits and pieces whether it’s your keys, stationery bits, or accessories, you could even hang pictures on them if you like.

5. HANG TROUSERS ON MULTI-LAYER S-HOOKS

For when retail therapy became over-effective, these hangers are such a clever way to store all your new jeans and trousers optimising more space in your wardrobe…for more retail therapy!

I’ve seen many plastic ones online, but I’d suggest getting a sturdier material like metal to support the extra weight better.

6. BUY A WALL-MOUNT FOLDING DESK

Fold-up and drop leaf tables have always been super-convenient ways to have a surface to work or eat on (for kitchen ones) when needed and tucked away when you don’t.

But, wall-mounted versions of these tables are a game-changer! I wish I had discovered these before buying a floor-standing corner desk for my son’s bedroom.

Like this Bronx Chevron Wall Desk from Next, some have storage compartments built-in for stationery bits and bobs too.

7. STORAGE HEADBOARD

When you have a headboard with storage compartments you don’t need to worry about bedside tables.

You can easily store your books, magazines, and any other bits that you’d like to keep nearby in it.

In the absence of a bedside table, the shelf on top also makes for a good spot to place your lamp.

8. BUY A BED FRAME WITH DRAWERS

Bed drawers are a great way to store blankets and sheets (at least that’s what I use mine for), you could literally store anything you like with these built-in drawers.

Not only are the drawers completely and discreetly hidden out of sight, but the storage they provide might even make you rethink if you really need all the other pieces of storage furniture in the room.

9. UNDER THE BED SHOE CART

Got too many shoes that won’t fit in your shoe cabinet? An under-bed shoe cart might be just the thing!

If you have a bed frame with space underneath, you could benefit from having all your extra shoes on a tidy shoe cart on wheels for convenience, discretion, and easy accessibility.

10. ADD FLOATING SHELVES

Floating shelves are both convenient and aesthetically pleasing.

They enable more floor space and make the room feel more open.

Unlike traditional shelves, floating shelves are installed in a way that hides the brackets, giving a sleek finish.

Great for storing books and personal items.

11. TRY A LOFT BED

Now I know you’re thinking that these beds look an awful lot like children’s bunk beds, and to be fair - you’re not wrong!

But unlike a bunk bed, a loft bed only has one bed at the top and a space at the bottom which you can make use of in any way you want.

You’ll often see loft beds use the space below for a desk area or reading nook, but it could be used for some extra storage space.

12. MOUNT TV ONTO WALL

If you have a TV in your bedroom, you probably have it on a set of drawers or a side table right?

While modern TVs are slimline and don’t take up much room, you could create even more space by mounting the TV onto your wall.

Not only does it free up floor space, but you can choose how high or low you want it to be.

13. FLOAT YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE

More and more people are opting for floating cabinets and storage in the bathroom, due to their space-saving qualities, so why not the bedroom too?

Floating bedside tables are a practical solution that offers extra floor space underneath and makes it easier to access under your bed too.

This floating bedside table from Urbansize features a drawer for any bits you’d rather not have on display.

14. BUY A FLOOR LAMP WITH SHELVES

Multi-purpose furniture reigns supreme in tiny spaces.

We’ve come into a new age where dual-functionality is the new norm, phones that surf the internet, games consoles that you can watch movies on, microwaves that grill, so why not lamps with shelves?

This Fulton Shelved Floor Lamp by Dunelm does just that!

15. USE AN OVERBED STORAGE TROLLEY DESK

If you don’t have a suitable office space in your home you might be working or studying with your laptop on the sofa or at the dining table.

But, if you have a lot of tasks to do or you want to escape the noisy living room, working from the comfort of your bedroom is more appealing. If you don’t have the space for a desk - this is another convenient alternative.

It is also convenient for those with disabilities, illnesses, and limited mobility.

16. HANG A CLOTHES ORGANISER

How do you hang multiple garments in a space only suitable for one? Buy a hanging clothes organiser!

Just think of how many tops, jumpers, and trousers you could fold into these canvas compartments.

What’s more, they are easy to clean and very cost-effective, you can snag this 7 compartment storage organiser from IKEA for just £9

17. HIDE JEWELLERY CABINET BEHIND MIRROR

Sometimes we women kind of like to have our jewellery on display - like on a decorative tree stand or glass jewellery box, but these can take up space on your dresser, so if you want more space, why not opt for a mirrored jewellery cabinet.

As well as providing more space, it will also protect your jewellery from dust and prying hands!

18. BUY A FREESTANDING CLOTHES RAIL ON WHEELS

Not everyone has the luxury of a built-in wardrobe in their bedroom or the space for a bulky wardrobe.

So a freestanding clothes rail with shelving like this one from Dunelm is a good choice for versatility and convenience with ample space for hanging, while the shelves provide a place to fold clothes or store shoes.

19. USE A CORK WALL TO HANG ALMOST ANYTHING

If your office clutter has become a horrendous sight, these cork walls will get them all organised in no time.

Cork is recyclable and renewable so this option would be super eco-friendly.

You can buy them as self-adhesive wall tiles or as a single board.

20. PUT YOUR JUNK IN A TRUNK

If you need to store old shoes, clothes, paperwork, magazines, etc, then a storage trunk might be just what you need.

Storage trunks have been around for hundreds of years and are still very popular today, evolving beyond function into a decorative element in a room too.

They can be easily stacked and double as a table as shown in the picture.

21. OVER-BED STORAGE COMBINATION

The wall that you have your headboard up against is probably a bare wall unless you have an accent wall or gallery wall, and as for furniture, it’s most likely two side tables with a small lamp on either side right?

But if you are struggling for extra space why not utilise that wall entirely? Over-bed storage creates space for much more cupboards, and furniture shops like IKEA allow you to create customised over-bed storage like the one seen in the image.

22. OVER-THE-DOOR SHOE POCKETS

Over-the-door shoe cabinets are simply designed to hang on the inside of your door.

They are very easy to assemble and require no drilling so wouldn’t damage your door during installation.

They are an easy, practical, and cheap alternative and virtually take up no space when compared to a shoe cabinet.

23. BUY A SOFA BED

A sofa bed would be a great option for a studio flat (apartment) where your rest centre and entertainment hub are one and the same.

You have the convenience of having a bed that also functions as a sofa for when your friends come round.

All without taking up any extra space!
