Step aside glass skin and cloud skin, there’s a new skincare obsession taking social media by storm!

Introducing “Jello Skin”, the latest TikTok K-beauty sensation that promises to give you a plump and dewy complexion like never before.

With its mesmerising jelly-like texture and hydrating properties, it’s no wonder that jello skin has captured the attention of beauty enthusiasts across the globe.

What Is The Jello Skin Trend?

“Jello Skin” is a term coined by Ava Lee, a skincare influencer and owner of beauty brand ByAva.

In a TikTok video below, she shares a video of herself getting a facial, as the esthetician remarks “It’s like the perfect consistency of Jello!” as he pinches her cheeks.

More than two million people have watched the video, and many influencers, experts, and brands have joined in to offer tips and tricks on how to obtain that coveted jelly-like texture.

But what’s really different about this skincare trend compared to many others is its focus on healthy lifestyle choices such as regular exercise and eating balanced meals, rather than only applying products topically to the skin.

Ava learned from an early age to take care of her skin from within with nourishing foods like jujubes which is a Chinese ‘red date’ fruit recognised for its radiance-boosting properties and goji berries known for being rich in antioxidants.

What Are The Benefits of Jello Skin?

Not only does it encourage an overall healthier lifestyle, but one of the other main benefits of jello skin is its ability to deeply moisturise and hydrate the skin as well as help to improve the skin’s elasticity, making it look firmer and smoother.

Jello skin was created to “depict the bouncy plump skin you see in those with cheeks full of collagen” says Ava, and the results match, giving a youthful and revitalised appearance.

Users have also reported a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as a natural glow, goodbye dull winter skin!

  • Jello skin is just one of the many skincare trends that have gained popularity in recent years.

Let’s take a closer look at how it compares to other popular skincare trends:

Glass Skin: Glass skin aims to create a flawless, translucent complexion that resembles glass. While both trends focus on achieving a radiant appearance, jello skin focuses more on hydration and plumpness, whereas glass skin emphasizes a smooth and poreless texture.

Dewy Skin: Dewy skin is all about creating a natural, healthy glow. Jello skin can help achieve a similar glow but with the added benefit of deep hydration and improved elasticity.

Sheet Masks: Sheet masks have been a skincare staple for years. While sheet masks can provide instant hydration, jello skin offers a more intense and longer-lasting moisturising effect.

  • While jello skin can provide impressive results, it’s important to be aware of common mistakes that can hinder your progress.

Here are some mistakes to avoid:

    • Overuse of collagen-based products: Using these products too frequently can lead to skin irritation and dryness. It’s important to follow the recommended usage guidelines provided by the manufacturer.

    • Ignoring other aspects of skincare: Jello skin is just one part of a comprehensive skincare routine. It’s essential to cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturise your skin regularly to maintain its overall health and appearance.

    • Using low-quality products: Not all collagen-based products are created equal. Investing in high-quality products that are formulated with beneficial ingredients can make a significant difference in the results you achieve.

    • Neglecting sun protection: Sunscreen is a crucial step in any skincare routine. Always remember to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 50 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays as they break down collagen.

How To Get Jello Skin

Ava says, “Jello skin is so much more than how your skin looks. There isn’t one product that will help you get it; it’s a whole lifestyle.” And everyone is different, some things may work better for some than others, so the ‘lifestyle’ requirement does allow some flexibility, even with diet choices.

Of course, the bounce in jello skin stems from having the optimal amount of collagen in your diet to improve your skin. Ava does this by including bone broth and collagen-boosting supplements in her diet.

But if you’re a vegan, opt for jujubes and goji berries as suggested above or include easier-to-find items in your diet like berries, mushrooms, papaya, carrots, pumpkin seeds and almonds.

Other ways to achieve jello skin include using a gua sha tool which is a traditional Chinese massage tool that is used to promote circulation, relieve tension, and improve overall well-being. It is typically made of jade, rose quartz, or other natural materials.

It can also promote lymphatic drainage. This is important because the lymphatic system plays a crucial role in removing waste and toxins from the body.

A gua sha tool can also aid in the absorption of skincare products, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin.

To use a gua sha tool, apply a facial oil or serum to clean, dry skin. Then, hold the tool at a 15-45 degree angle and gently glide it along the contours of the face, neck, and décolletage. Use light to medium pressure, and always move the tool in an upward and outward motion.

You can grab Ava’s very own gua sha tool here.

When looking for collagen-friendly skincare products, it’s important to choose those with core ingredients like hyaluronic acid, retinol, and vitamin C.

So, if you want to begin your jello skin journey, here are some must-haves to get you started:

A SPF 50 SUNSCREEN

As mentioned earlier, you’ll need a good sunscreen to wear all year round!

Head beauty trainer Rumpa Singh recommends slathering on a broad-spectrum sunscreen (protects against both UVA & UVB radiation) of at least SPF 50 which can block 98% of harmful rays, that can not only break down collagen but also lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

COLLAGEN-FRIENDLY SKINCARE PRODUCTS

To achieve jello skin, your skincare routine has to include collagen-rich products.

Alfiya Johar, a professional make-up artist, explains: “Ingredients such as Vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and peptides can help to stimulate collagen and boost skin plumping.”

SUPPLEMENTS

Hydrating your skin from the inside out can not be overstated.

Ava includes collagen-boosting supplements in her routine including marine collagen. But if you are vegan, try Feel’s highly recommended Pro Collagen Re-Imagined.

MASSAGE & EXFOLIATING TOOLS

We’ve already highlighted the benefits of using a gua sha tool but don’t sleep on exfoliating tools either!

Electric exfoliating brush tools in particular make attaining super smooth skin a breeze! To find out all the benefits of electric exfoliator brushes as well as a full list of our favourites, click here.

A SERUM

Last but not least, you’ll need a good serum!

In an Instagram post with her mum, Ava shows her 618k followers three massage techniques her mum has taught her recommending Lancome’s Advanced Génifique Serum. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, try Olay’s Collagen Peptide24 Serum.
